Short Story Rough Draft-The Last Train

I have been working on a rough draft for a short story for my book that contains flash fiction and short stories. Here is a few lines of what I’ve completed. Keep in mind it is a rough draft. It’s working title is The Last Train.

This story follows a man that lost his child and is dealing with that loss by working long hours at the office. This has a devastating effect on him and his wife. He has to take the train to work each day, but little does he know this will be his last ride on the train.

As he walks on the platform he feels his shoes stick to the pavement, God only knows what he has stepped in. Mental note to self, remove shoes before going in apartment, he thinks. He looks around and notices the platform has the usual suspects, the people that he sees every night and few new characters including Chuck which is puzzling since Chuck usually doesn’t work this late at night, if he works at all, he thinks.

He thinks of walking over to talk to him but thinks better. He doesn’t want to get caught up in some stupid conversation about work,  and he doesn’t like Chuck, well not as much as he use to. He spent many a night with Chuck at the bars after work and that world was behind him, he had been clean and sober for six months now. He just looks around at the new people on the platform and notices something strange.

These new characters seem to be just staring straight ahead. They have a strange look on their face like they are all in la la land. One woman dressed in dated clothes and is wearing parachute pants for Christs sake and is wearing a walkman with the orange cushions on the head phones. “What is it the 1980s?”

Another man is decked out in plaid and torn jeans as if Kurt Cobain might have dressed him, and yet another man has his hair in of all things a mullet and wearing it long with a dangling ear ring. He begins to wonder if they all came from some kind of flashback party or something. He just shakes his head and looks forward, just needs to get home he thinks, but can’t stop thinking about how they all have that blank stare on their face.

This story follows a man that lost his child and is dealing with that loss by working long hours at the office. This has a devastating effect on him and his wife he doesn’t know it but this will soon be his last train ride.
