Free Write-one Last Meal

Oh, how the hair upon his neck stood on end. There are things in this world that we can’t explain. Tonight was one of those nights for Michelle.

She stood in the foyer of an old, abandoned house. How she got here, she has no clue. The last thing she remembers is going to bed and drifting off to sleep.

She looks around the room that is off to the left. It is old and dingy, with cobwebs hanging from the corners and off the curtains. She walks into the room and sees a lone plate sitting at the head of the table, and it doesn’t look dirty, and there is steam rising from the plate.

She moves to the head of the table and sits down. She picks up the spoon and takes a taste of what looks like clam chowder, and it is delicious.

I wonder who could have made this, and she hears a familiar voice and turns around towards the kitchen, but there is no one there, so she continues eating the soup. It tastes like her mom’s clam chowder, and then she hears the voice again.

This time she is surprised to see her mother standing there, smiling. She stood and walked towards her; a tear in her eye, she reaches for her and realizes where she is now. She is in the home she grew up in.

Her mother smiles and says, “I wanted to make you one last meal before…” and she hesitates.

Michelle can see a tear in her eye and asks, “What is it?”

Her mother points towards the corner of the room, and there is a casket sitting with candles all around it. Michelle walks slowly over, and the lid begins opening on its own, and what she sees almost brings her to her knees.

Lying in the casket is her, and she begins to sob. Michelle’s mom walks over and whispers it is time to go. Michelle nods, and they head towards the light that has appeared in the kitchen to spend the rest of her time cooking meals with her mother.
