Young deckhand scrubbing a sailing ship beside a stern nun

Keep Writing

As I said before I do a lot of free writing and today I wrote 521 words. I do these in fast spurts to keep the mind active. I collect these pieces to add to the story I am writing. I feel good about this writing exercise and can tell that ideas are starting to flow a little easier. I’m slowly picking bits and pieces and refining them for the book I’m writing. My journal has become a great source to write these down and today and going to take a few and add them to my rough draft.

Here is some free writing I did today.

Young Silas

Silas grew up in the orphanage so young. He was coddled all through his young years. As a baby he was held by each of the nuns who clambered to take care of the young baby sit was the only one in the orphanage at the time. Even though they were nuns they still had the motherly instincts that could not be settled. There was even fighting amongst them as to who was to hold him to put him to sleep and feed him his bottle for feeding time. This translated to when he got older even when he would get in trouble. For once he started a small fire in the library because he had read a book about fires and wanted to feel one for himself. They were stern with him but still understanding as this was a boy who wanted to know about everything. He read many science books about anything and everything. He was always bringing small animals into the orphanage because he was also caring and if he saw a young bird or squirrel he felt as though he was the one that needed to take care of it. The nuns thought for sure he would be a man that would make great discoveries. He was smart though his studies were lacking, but he was a studier of life in the real world. He had no use for a book if it didn’t involve some kind of adventure because he already felt at a young age that so much more could be learned from the real world. Books only lead to the adventure and never really taught the real aspects of life. He would go walking through town and the nuns would have to search for him because he would get lost in the outside world. He was a wonderer not only in his mind but in his body. He was never going to stand still. He had to see the whole world and that was evident by his actions in his youth that it was what was going to happen.

On one particular adventure, which the nuns recounted to visitors who might want to adopt young Silas he had ended up down by the docks where the many traders came through he ended up on a boat. He was discovered and the men became enamored with the young boy and his knowledge of the ship, for he read many books about ships in the orphanage. They almost adopted him when one of the nuns saw him standing on the deck with a bucket and mop. When he confronted by the nun young Silas told her he was already employed and would not need to go back to the orphanage. He was going to sail the world with these men. The nun was furious with him and the sailors on board just laughed and enjoyed the interaction between the boy and the nun as she chased him around. She told the sailors they should be ashamed as she carried the young boy from the ship under her arms for he was only 6 years old.

These stories made the nuns angry but when by themselves laugh because they knew that great adventures awaited young Silas.
