Flash Fiction-The Day that Marty Died

Marty slammed the door to his car and dropped his head to the steering wheel. How could this day get any worse, hethought to himself. He could feel the stress building inside him. After the ass chewing from his boss for something he didn’t even do he needed to unwind so he flipped on the radio in his car and headed home

Normally he was a happy go lucky guy but at this moment he felt anything but happy. He flipped through the radio stations until he found one that fit his mood and began to sing along to the first song he heard, It’s the End of the World as We Know it.

He began to feel better as the trip went on and even after the song was done kept singing the lyrics in his head. He even turned the radio way down so it wouldn’t interrupt him and hummed the tune out loud as he pulled into his drive way.

This continued through the evening and didn’t bother him because it was soothing. As bedtime came around though it was not so soothing. There was an ever lasting loop running in his head.

He tossed and turned unable to even count sheep. He pulled his phone out and finished the song like had heard people say to do. He pulled a book out and read, but the words blurred. He finally gave up and got up to grab warm glass of milk, his mom always said that worked for her.

Sitting at the kitchen table he realized this was not the answer to his problem and began to do research on songs stuck in you head.

While he was doing his research he stopped at doing puzzles, he hated puzzles. At this point he would try anything and pulled the crossword out of the newspaper and got to work, and to his amazement it began to work. As long as he worked on the puzzle the song was gone.

The sun began to just come over the horizon when he finished the puzzle. He sat back and said out loud, “Finally something that…,” then the song popped back into his head slowly at first. It’s the end of the world as we know it, and quickly increased in speed and volume…”No!,” he screamed.

He ran back into the bedroom and began tearing everything apart. He felt like a caged animal. He grabbed his phone hoping to find something else that would help.

He got down to an article where it mentioned ‘ear worm,’ and his phone shut down. It had died from being on all night and him forgetting to charge it, but he did see ear worm. Maybe he had an ear worm, but how to get rid of it.

He ran to the tool shed out back and looked around for a mirror. When he got it angled just right he said, “ah hah,” he saw something. He put the tweezers in and tried to pull it out. That is when the song got much louder in his head.

He fell to the floor and reached for the power drill. The motor began to whine as he brought it closer to his ear. His eyes grew wide as he was just about to push it into his head…the music stopped.

Matt sighed and began to pull drill away and the music started up again. Every time he put the drill up to his ear it would stop. He realized he couldn’t walk around with a drill to his head so there was only one thing to do.

He made the music stop, that was The Day that Marty Died’.
